It’s been a few weeks now, but Kaia decided to give herself a haircut. It was on a Sunday, we were all busy doing something–Scott is down in the basement, I’m in the kitchen, and Kaia is in the living room. She heads down to the basement wearing a cowboy hat. Scott sees that she’s wearing the hat and asks, “So what’s up with the hat?” Kaia says back, “I wear a cowboy hat when I’m nervous.” However, she won’t elaborate, so Scott doesn’t force the issue and goes back to work. A few minutes later, Kaia takes the hat off, and Scott notices her hair, “So, did Mommy give you a haircut?” Kaia seems proud and quite pleased with this response, but she still doesn’t say anything.
Fast forward 5 minutes later, I’m doing the dishes and I don’t notice Kaia standing right beside me. I look down and notice her short, choppy bangs and her newly shag style haircut. “KAIA!” I blurt out. “WHAT HAVE YOU DONE WITH YOUR HAIR!!!” And I laugh. I laugh and I laugh and I laugh some more. (Scott tells me this was the wrong thing to do, he knows, he did the same thing when he was kid, but he was like, NINE years old.)
Kaia hides her face and runs to her bedroom and hides in her closet. I think, ‘Awww, what have I done.’ To tell you the truth, my first thought when I saw saw her haircut was that she looked adorable.
We coax her out of the closet, and we all talk it over, and everything is all better. Turns out Kaia had gotten gum stuck in her hair. So she cut the gum out on one side, then she decided to cut the hair on the other side. Then she decided to trim her bangs, because she was tired of the bangs getting in her eyes.
The next morning as we’re getting ready for school, I’m leaning over to tie my shoes and Kaia comes over and pushes my bangs out of my eyes and asks me, “Would you like me to cut your bangs Mommy?”

Here’s a picture of Kaia a couple days later with her new hair cut (and after a visit to KidsHair.) She just got home from ballet class.
