Vocabulary Update

Brenda wrote this at 11:09 pm:

So I found another piece of paper that Kaia wrote on to vent her frustrations. Last night while I was picking stuff off the table, I found this:

When I found the paper, Kaia said “NO!!!”, grabbed it from my hand, crumpled it up, and threw it in the trash. So, I guess I really wasn’t meant to see it, much less pick it out of the garbage, take pictures of and post it on Facebook, as well as blog about it. That’s one of things about me that makes me a Poophead Mommy.

I’m going to have to get this girl a diary someday.

Hair Cut

Brenda wrote this at 3:49 pm:

It’s been a few weeks now, but Kaia decided to give herself a haircut. It was on a Sunday, we were all busy doing something–Scott is down in the basement, I’m in the kitchen, and Kaia is in the living room. She heads down to the basement wearing a cowboy hat. Scott sees that she’s wearing the hat and asks, “So what’s up with the hat?” Kaia says back, “I wear a cowboy hat when I’m nervous.” However, she won’t elaborate, so Scott doesn’t force the issue and goes back to work. A few minutes later, Kaia takes the hat off, and Scott notices her hair, “So, did Mommy give you a haircut?” Kaia seems proud and quite pleased with this response, but she still doesn’t say anything.

Fast forward 5 minutes later, I’m doing the dishes and I don’t notice Kaia standing right beside me. I look down and notice her short, choppy bangs and her newly shag style haircut. “KAIA!” I blurt out. “WHAT HAVE YOU DONE WITH YOUR HAIR!!!” And I laugh. I laugh and I laugh and I laugh some more. (Scott tells me this was the wrong thing to do, he knows, he did the same thing when he was kid, but he was like, NINE years old.)

Kaia hides her face and runs to her bedroom and hides in her closet. I think, ‘Awww, what have I done.’ To tell you the truth, my first thought when I saw saw her haircut was that she looked adorable.

We coax her out of the closet, and we all talk it over, and everything is all better. Turns out Kaia had gotten gum stuck in her hair. So she cut the gum out on one side, then she decided to cut the hair on the other side. Then she decided to trim her bangs, because she was tired of the bangs getting in her eyes.

The next morning as we’re getting ready for school, I’m leaning over to tie my shoes and Kaia comes over and pushes my bangs out of my eyes and asks me, “Would you like me to cut your bangs Mommy?”

Here’s a picture of Kaia a couple days later with her new hair cut (and after a visit to KidsHair.) She just got home from ballet class.

Halloween ‘08

Brenda wrote this at 11:25 am:

Kaia decided this year that she wanted to be a robot. So I had some fun putting the robot costume together. She and Lucy went trick or treating together and had a blast. Here are some pictures of the evening.

Lucy’s Wonder Woman costume was really cute… and it was homemade too. Josh did a super job with it.

I’m not sure what Lucy is pointing at it here, but judging by the reaction of the 2 of them, it must be really hilarious.

Autumn is here

Brenda wrote this at 11:10 am:

This fall has been nothing to complain about, the weather has been beautiful and the tree colors have been really pretty and vibrant. This blog would not be complete without a picture of Kaia in big ol’ pile of leaves.

Playing in a big old leaf pile.

A Special Note from Kaia to her Mom

Brenda wrote this at 7:11 pm:

One day last month, Kaia got in trouble…which meant she got sent to her room. While in her room, she tends to vent her frustrations by drawing pictures, maybe something that could be captioned, “Mommy with Fangs”. This time, though, she wrote something…for me.

If you are having problems reading this message, allow me to translate:
Line 1: I hate you Mom
Line 2: that’s because (?) (?)
Line 3: you’re being mean to me
Line 4: Love, Kaia
Line: Bad: My Mom

I’m so impressed by this new found way of communicating, that I’m keeping this, and framing it.

Amanda and Neil’s Wedding

Brenda wrote this at 10:42 pm:

Kaia was a flower girl to her cousin Amanda’s wedding. Here she is all dressed up and about to head out the door.

Kaia had fun wearing her dress.

It was a lovely, outdoor wedding. While it rained cats and dogs the day before, the day of the wedding was beautiful. Kaia was excited to hang out with her “big” cousins. She really looks up to all of them. She walked down the aisle by herself and stood up front with the rest of the wedding party during the entire ceremony. Although, she did start making funny faces.

Of course, while she tolerated alot of picture taking that day, my request for just one more smile got me an “Arrrrrrrrr”.

Congratulations Amanda and Neil! You two are a terrific couple!

New bike

Brenda wrote this at 5:24 pm:

For the past month or so, Kaia has been asking if she can get a bike, one with training wheels. She was worried she wouldn’t get one until she was five. This past weekend, we surprised her with one. Here’s her reaction.

She’s actually jumping up and down and pumping her fists in the air. Now I call that true giddiness. Here are a few more pictures.
Concentrating

Yes, I have been remiss about posting the arrival of Kaia’s new cousin, Joey. He was born on April 11. We can’t wait to meet him. Here is a picture of him a few weeks old.

The Winter/Spring Post

Brenda wrote this at 10:52 pm:

It’s been awhile since I’ve posted anything, but here, is the a brand new post! My brother-in-law Ray said he’ll post something on his blog the first instance his new baby is born tomorrow if I post something first, so that is my motivation to post something. ;-) Otherwise, I’d be waiting for the day where I’d have something truly witty to say.

In January and February, Kaia had ballet and tap dancing class at the local rec center. She had lots of fun doing twirls and she loved her tap shoes. Unfortunately, I don’t have any pictures because my camera’s battery was dying and wouldn’t keep a charge.

But here is a picture of her in March, with her snowman friend. This is on the very first day of spring.

She made this same look back when she was 2 years old. My how she’s grown! Maybe it’s time to have another one!

Here she is with her dad on a Monday while he is trying to do some work on his laptop after he picked Kaia up at Barnehage.

This spring, Kaia is learning to read. She’s sounding out words and she goes to bed sounding out the words in her Cat in the Hat dictionary just like her ol’ dad did when he was a kid. She likes doing workbooks with simple rhyming words and she works at spelling them out. I think it’s pretty neat. I took these pictures while she was working on this workbook, but I’m posting them because this bright face of hers never ceases to give me the warm fuzzies.

Tomorrow, Kaia’s new cousin will be born. Stay tuned for that!

Post of Christmas Past, Part 2

Brenda wrote this at 10:55 pm:

The night we drove up to the lake it started snowing heavily and the roads got pretty snow covered…and it was dark…and scary…and I freaked out, because I’m anxiety prone and I have the wonderful talent of envisioning all possible bad outcomes. But we made it and Kaia was asleep through it all. Kaia easily got reacquainted with her Aunt Andrea and Uncle Ray. Grandma and papa got Kaia busy making lefse. In the mornings, she’d help grandma make pancakes and waffles. She went sledding a bunch down the neighbor’s hill and had fun flying off the dock onto the lake. She also got a skiing lesson, and while she laughed and smiled the whole time, when she was done, she said she didn’t ever want to go skiing again. Go figure.

Here she is in her elf hat. On Christmas Eve, as she has the last couple of years, she took the role of elf very seriously and handed out the presents. When she got tired, she passed on the hat to me.

Kaia helped decorate this gingerbread house. That’s a festivitree in the background, which according to Andrea is pronouced “fest-TIV-i-tree and not FEST-ti-va-tree, which is how I liked to say it.

And here is the entire clan, except for Sara who was taking the picture.

And there’s Sara, sitting next to Kaia. And on the other side of Kaia are Molly and Josh.

Hope everyone had a great holiday season!

Post of Christmas Past, Part 1

Brenda wrote this at 10:53 pm:

I meant to get a couple pictures of December of up before now, but here they are. On December 2, we all went for a Holly Trolley ride on the Como-Harriet streetcar line. Once again, Kaia was reticent about sitting next to the old fake bearded guy. Here’s a picture of the two of us.

On the 12th, Kaia attended the closing program for her Barnehage school. She and her classmates did a little skit where she got dressed like a little mouse and she and her fellow mice got to chase around a little girl baker stirring a bowl of something or other. I asked her to smile for the camera.

Kaia decided this year she loves lefse and could not get enough of it. Here she is showing off a Norwegian flag cookie and her thumb.

More lefse was made at Grandma and Papa’s but that will be Part 2 of the Post of Christmas Past, maybe tomorrow or the next day. Stay tuned for Christmas pictures.
